Introduction
The International Conference of Computational Methods and Experiments in Materials Characterisation ran successfully for nine years (Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2003; Portland, Maine, in 2005; Bologna, Italy, in 2007; New Forest Campus of the Wessex Institute in 2009; Kos, Greece, in 2011; Siena, Italy, in 2013; Valencia, Spain in 2015; Tallinn, Estonia in 2017 and Lisbon, Portugal in 2019). In 2021, it incorporated contact themes and was organised online because of the pandemic. The series continues in 2027 having adopted a shorter title for the event and including mechanical contact which is not only a potential cause of component failure but also a quite common characterisation technique.
All papers to be published in the conference volume as well as those from previous meetings are permanently archived at https://library.witpress.com where they are available to the international community.
Objectives
The aim of the conference is to facilitate interactions within the research community and generate discussion on the latest developments in the rapidly advancing field of materials science and engineering. The meeting is a response to the demand for high quality products for both industry and consumers. An important step towards achieving this is material characterisation, namely, the determination of the physical and chemical properties of materials used.
Consideration of different experimental techniques as well as computer simulation methods is essential to achieve a proper understanding. A very wide range of materials, starting with metals through polymers and semiconductors to composites, necessitates a wide spectrum of experimental characterisation techniques and constitutive theories.
Surface treatment, in particular, enhances material properties; contact mechanics allows the determination of the in-service behaviour of components subject to contact conditions. Component durability is assessed by the understanding of surface engineering, that is, wear, frictional and lubrication dynamics.
Current research on modification technologies can increase the surface durability of materials. The characteristics of a material system reveal which surface engineering methods should be chosen and, as a consequence, it is essential to study contact mechanics in conjunction with the application of surface treatment.
