Search Methods for Automated Forming of Structured Digital Libraries
Vasyl Bilokon graduated from Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics (KNURE), Ukraine and has recently passed his MPhil viva at WIT with a thesis on ‘Search Methods for Automated Forming of Structured Digital Libraries’. The external examiner was Dr Andrew Phippen from University of Plymouth and the internal examiner was Dr Alexander Galybin.
In the thesis, the structure and principles of building Electronic Digital Libraries (EDL) and the models and methods used for Information Retrieval (IR) were described.
In the thesis the basic problems that appear in the building of DL, types of stored resources and metadata used for the description of electronic documents in DL were considered.
The main part of the thesis included a consideration of existing models of IR and existing search methods of IR that may be implemented for DL.
Vasyl proposed an approach for the automated forming of an EDL based on data from course syllabuses. The EDL is focused on educational material and can be used in distance learning systems.
Also in the thesis the basic principles of the assessments used for the evaluation of information searching results were considered.
Vasyl presented an excellent thesis and as a result of his research the examiners recommended that he be awarded the degree of Master of Philosophy.
Grateful acknowledgement is given to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for their support.
