The Workshop on Numerical Algebra, Algorithms, and Analysis in honour of Professor Ken Hayami’s 60th birthday was held at the National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo, Japan during January 11-12, 2016. Over 30 participants including 13 invited speakers from China, Germany, Japan, Spain, and the USA shared ideas, had lively discussions on a wide variety of topics, and dedicated their excellent talks in token of affection and gratitude to Professor Hayami.
Professor Ken Hayami obtained Master Degree in 1981 from the University of Tokyo and began his career as a researcher at the research laboratories of NEC Corporation. During 1986-88, he was a visiting researcher at the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT), U.K., where he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1991 for his thesis entitled “A Projection Transformation Method for Nearly Singular Surface Boundary Element Integrals” under the supervision of Professor Carlos Brebbia. He also received a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1993 under the supervision of Professor Masao Iri. In 1993, Hayami became an associate professor at the Department of Mathematical Engineering and Information Physics, Faculty of Engineering (1993-2000) and Graduate School of Engineering (1995-2000), at the University of Tokyo. After that, he became a professor in Mathematical Informatics at the National Institute of Informatics (NII) (2001-2006) and the Department of Informatics of SOKENDAI (The Graduate University of Advanced Studies) (2002-2004), respectively. He was the head of the Department of Informatics of SOKENDAI from 2006 to 2008. Currently, he is a professor in the Principles of Informatics Research Division of NII and the Department of Informatics of SOKENDAI.
Organized by a committee consisting of four Ph.D. students of Professor Hayami -- Dr. Xiaoke Cui (The University of Tokyo), Dr. Keiichi Morikuni (University of Tsukuba), Mr. Kouta Sugihara (SOKENDAI) and Dr. Ning Zheng (SOKENDAI), the two-day workshop started with a brief introduction of Professor Hayami addressed by Dr. Morikuni. After that, several invited speakers including Professors Zhong-Zhi Bai (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Michael Eiermann (Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg), José Mas Marí (Universitat Politècnica de València), Lothar Reichel (Kent State University), Takashi Tsuchiya (National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies), Yimin Wei (Fudan University) and Jun-Feng Yin (Tongji University), and Drs. Kensuke Aihara (Tokyo University of Science), Akira Imakura (University of Tsukuba), Yuji Nakatsukasa (The University of Tokyo), Takaaki Nara (The University of Tokyo), Tomohiro Sogabe (Nagoya University) and Takumi Washio (The University of Tokyo) presented the research results on Krylov subspace methods, preconditioning, optimization, regularization and eigenvalue problems, etc.
In addition, a special talk entitled ‘Enchanted with Singularity’ by Professor Hayami was presented on January 12, where he summarized his research on preconditioned conjugate gradient methods for vector processors, quadrature for nearly singular integrals in the boundary element method, and numerical linear algebra including Krylov subspace methods for singular systems, least squares problems and on inverse problems, etc. Before a group photo was taken, Dr. Zheng expressed his best wishes, and conveyed greeting messages and showed videos from colleagues and friends worldwide.
A sumptuous buffet banquet was held on Tuesday evening. After a toast to Professor Hayami, he expressed his gratitude to the success of the workshop and the greeting wishes. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our esteemed professor’s birthday and a most memorable event.
