Description

The Course introduces participants to the key measures approved by the EU for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in transport sector and logistics with special attention to the innovation of ports and ships and to the adoption of integrated rules on the promotion of energy from renewable sources. It provides a clear overview of the latest developments with focus on the adopted measures to promote sustainable maritime and air transport, digitalisation and adaptation of ports and ships, sustainable urban mobility, multimodal transport hubs and a comprehensive and complete network of alternative fuels infrastructure.

Programme

Day One

  • The new legal framework on decarbonisation in the Transport sector
    • FuelEU Maritime regulation promoting the production and uptake of sustainable alternative fuels in shipping.
    • The Shipping Emission Trading System in UK/EU regulating the greenhouse gas emissions in heavy industry, aviation and maritime sector.
    • The international response for measures to decarbonise shipping.
  • Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and Support schemes.
    • RefuelEU Aviation Regulation promoting the production and uptake of sustainable alternative fuels in aviation.
    • Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) on the promotion of energy from renewable sources.
    • Support schemes and financial aid for the production of sustainable fuels with minimized risk of negative impact on land-use and biodiversity.

Day Two

  • Renewable fuels and sustainable urban mobility schemes.
    • The use of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (mostly renewable hydrogen and hydrogen based synthetic fuels), of recycled carbon fuels, and of other than food and feed crops-based biofuels in the transport sector;
    • Sustainable urban mobility schemes to serve the transport in urban areas and in airports as part of a broader shift towards zero-emission mobility.
  • The digitalisation and simplification of ports and ships.
    • What involves the realization of smart ports i.e. digitalization of logistics, advanced technologies. Smart Port Examples.
    • The deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure with publicly available electric recharging infrastructure and with publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling stations across the Union for road vehicles, trains, vessels and stationary aircraft.

Location

new forestThe New Forest is one of the UK's most popular tourist destinations and offers many attractions all year round, including picturesque forest villages as well as beautiful scenery. It is located in Southern England, spreading over 150 square miles of Hampshire. The New Forest was established as a royal hunting ground by King William I, and by the 14th century, the land was being used to produce timber for the shipbuilding industry on the south coast. Today, after nearly 1000 years, the forest is still Crown property and is administered by the Forestry Commission. Since the reign of King William I commoners have been given the right to graze their livestock, normally ponies, cattle and pigs, on Forest land where they wander freely. In the New Forest, the well-being of the animals and the special needs of the countryside are a priority. The Forest is unarguably recognised as one of the most unique and important wilderness areas in Western Europe and, because of this, it is now a National Park.
