Generally speaking, we believe that an evaluation and improvement of a water supply network must be carried out by following the following steps.
- First evaluation of the network. Water balance.
- Collection of network data. Selection and application of performance indicators.
- Construction of the mathematical model of the network. First quantitative assessments.
- Application of optimization models. Work with scenarios.
- Identification of network criticalities. Decisions on where and how to take action to improve the good.
For points 1 to 3, the methodology has already been developed in scientific literature and in professional practice, starting from the “ancient” book of Coelho and the procedures that IWA develops and updates frequently. These procedures are already applied in professional practice by the engineering companies that work in the sector and are updated to the state of the art.
The course will explain the already established methodologies, to show the results carried out by the research group at Politecnico di Milano (and applied in real cases) related to optimization, search of the leakages and sectorization, in order to develop a procedure which goes beyond the simple models so far available.
The procedures will be applied to case studies.

Prof Stefano Mambretti from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, works in the field of Hydraulic engineering, as a researcher, designer and consultant in many countries in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. He has acted as co-chairman of many WIT conferences and is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning. He is a member of the WIT Board of Directors. Stefano has numerous scientific publications and has written several books.
His experience in water supply networks is related to optimization and water leakage reduction, both as a researcher and as a consultant for institutions and companies. He wrote the first papers demonstrating the possibility of optimization for the water supply network in Milano, which resulted in the managers calling for tenders for water supply system automation (value: 2.5 million of Euros). In this field he is also a consultant for FUNASA, the Agency of Brazilian Health Ministry, which manages investments in engineering systems for cities with up to 50,000 inhabitants. Stefano is also a consultant of the Pan-American Health Organization.
The New Forest is one of the UK's most popular tourist destinations and offers many attractions all year round, including picturesque forest villages as well as beautiful scenery. It is located in Southern England, spreading over 150 square miles of Hampshire. The New Forest was established as a royal hunting ground by King William I, and by the 14th century, the land was being used to produce timber for the shipbuilding industry on the south coast. Today, after nearly 1000 years, the forest is still Crown property and is administered by the Forestry Commission. Since the reign of King William I commoners have been given the right to graze their livestock, normally ponies, cattle and pigs, on Forest land where they wander freely. In the New Forest, the well-being of the animals and the special needs of the countryside are a priority. The Forest is unarguably recognised as one of the most unique and important wilderness areas in Western Europe and, because of this, it is now a National Park.

The course will take place at the Wessex Institute at Ashurst Lodge located in the New Forest, an outstanding National Park that borders the South Coast. Ashurst Lodge is an ideal venue for conferences, courses and seminars.
