This workshop will consider new insights from an ongoing crisis related to a pandemic known as "coronavirus". The case study analysis goes from the theoretical and empirical perspective to practical implementation of solutions.

Some challenges derived from this pandemic, have no precedent in recent centuries.

    1. The territorial scope of the crisis is global
    2. Cascading effects are not fully known yet, especially regarding the long-term.
    3. Damage is not relevant on Infrastructure but instead on Livelihood resources
    4. Underlying causes of Vulnerability (poverty ratio, WASH services availability, health condition, density, and mobility and communication facilities availability) play a key role in negative impact.
    5. Territory must be reconceptualized considering that interactions and flows derived from typical travel patterns (home-work, home-school, home-shopping centers) may have a dramatical shift toward remote activity.

The workshop aim is to provide a forum for discussion about the need to shift urban planning toward not just response in the aftermath of a crisis but to implement permanent changes in the way we build our cities and specifically in the way we manage mobility (travel modes, travel patterns, etc.)

Topics

A smart city is more than a high-tech city. People are at the forefront of city change. The principles of sustainability, quality, equity and rapidity are the main pillars for smart city planning.

This workshop will open a discussion about some dominant paradigms that have shaped most of our cities. How should we build our public spaces if social distancing should be kept? What travel modes would be more efficient when massive and usually crowded transit is to be avoided? Have we reached the time when remote activity should be mixed with onsite activities in a systematic way?

Experiences from countries/cities where better and faster control of the pandemic was achieved will be reviewed (Singapore) and some case-studies where the damage was far bigger and long-lasting, too (New York, Lima). This provides a better perspective of references and its correlation with the variables considered.

Course Presenter

Dr Jorge Diaz, Dr Jeremy Lin and MSo Surya Dev Prakash

The Program offers a wide approach, embracing the medical perspective, urban planning practices and mobility solutions from IoT.

Dr Jorge Diaz is a senior consultant at a global scale, his experience spans over twenty-five years. He is also a researcher on topics related to Smart City Planning and has collaborated with the National Council for Science and Technology Development in countries such as Peru, Mexico and Chile. He has been awarded research fellowships by some international organizations from Canada, Chile, South-Africa, Mexico and the European Union to provide technical assistance related to Urban Planning.

Dr Jeremy Lim is the co-founder and CEO of AMiLi, the first dedicated gut microbiome full service company in Southeast Asia. He is also co-director of global health at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health where he works to enhance cooperation, capacity building and knowledge sharing across the region.

MSo Surya Dev Prakash is a technology enthusiast and versatile expert having overall 8 years of experience in Smart Cities Solutions & Strategy, National as well as Local Government Advisory, Urban Infrastructures Planning, Strategic Planning, Consulting-Business & Technology (Strategy, Innovation, Transformation & Implementation), Digital Transformation Strategy, ICT, IoT & Emerging Technologies Strategy etc.
