The second International Conference on Defence Sites, Heritage and Future will be reconvened in 2014 at the Arsenale di Venezia, Italy following the success of the first meeting held in Portsmouth, UK in 2012. The conference series launched by the Wessex Institute of Technology is co-organised on this occasion with IUAV and the Arsenale di Venezia Spa, Italy.
Redundant defence sites offer a range of opportunities to planners, architects and local communities to redevelop large areas, bringing new life to often neglected parts of towns. The opportunities are common to many countries and the papers to be presented at the conference will stress this common feature and help to share experiences of the transformation of defence sites to civilian uses around the world.
The conference objective is to raise the knowledge of the scale, design and functions of defence sites. It brings a better understanding of the issues raised by their redundancy and the implications of different disposal processes for the land.
The re-use of defence sites also raises questions regarding the need to recover brownfields and contaminated land which can have far-reaching legal responsibilities and environmental consequences.
Delegates attending Defence Heritage 2014 will be invited to submit an extended version of their paper for possible publication in the International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning one of the Journals edited by the Wessex Institute.
Another aim of the conference is to discuss the need to achieve sustainable development which involves issues related to maintenance and conservation, as well as built and natural environmental controls, while responding to the needs and aspirations of the community.
Who Should Attend
Government agencies, developers, planners, architects, historians, environmentalists as well as those in the social and economic sciences related to this important topic.
Arsenale di Venezia Spa, was established in 2003, with the aim of revitalising the Arsenale complex.
The Arsenale Company has concentrated its efforts on the regeneration of the Arsenale’s historical heritage. Important monumental buildings have been restored and reconverted to such cultural, scientific and productive uses to ensure the future viability and development of the entire complex.
The Università IUAV di Venezia, is dedicated to project-based learning and research and includes the design of the spaces and environments in which we live: buildings, cities, landscapes and their surroundings.
The Department of Architecture, Construction and Conservation (DACC) is closely associated with the conference where the primary focus of its teaching and research is based on the architecture of ancient buildings utilized for modern use. Contemporary design, conservation and feasibility of single buildings, the complex organization of buildings and elements of construction are all taken into account.
