 Travel Information

The following four airports are closest to the New Forest.

From Southampton Airport to the Wessex Institute

Southampton International Airport is served by flights from a wide range of European cities with Flybe.

  • Rail:  Southampton Airport Parkway station is less than 50 metres from the airport terminal.  Frequent services connect to Brockenhurst station (visit http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk for more details on train times and fares). From Brockenhurst station it is a short walk to the hotel. Taxis are available at Brockenhurst Station.
  • Taxi: Taxis are readily available at the airport and will cost approximately £50.
  • Road:  Several car hire companies operate at the airport and the 30km journey to the Hotel will take approximately 40 minutes. The airport is located 1km from Junction 4 of the M27 motorway. Directions from the M27 can be found in “Road Travel” below.

 

From Bournemouth Airport to the Wessex Institute

Bournemouth International Airport is served by flights from a range of European cities with Ryanair.

  • Rail: Shuttle buses travel hourly from the airport terminal to Bournemouth Rail Station, between 7am and 6.30pm, seven days a week, costing £4. From Bournemouth station, trains run direct to Brockenhurst Station (visit http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk for more details on train times and fares). From Brockenhurst station it is a short walk to the hotel. Taxis are available at Brockenhurst Station.
  • Taxi: Taxis are readily available at the airport and will cost approximately £40 to the Balmer Lawn Hotel. Several hire car companies operate at the airport, and the 35km drive will take approximately 45 minutes.
  • Road:  Europcar are the only care hire company located at Bournemouth Airport. There are various routes from the Airport to the hotel, but we recommend travelling on the A31 to Cadnam and then on the A337 to Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst. The Hotel can be found on the A337, on the left-hand side, just before reaching Brockenhurst.

 

From London Heathrow Airport to the Wessex Institute

Heathrow is the UK's largest international airport with regular arrivals from major cities worldwide.

  • Rail:  The Heathrow Express connects the airport to London Waterloo station, where trains depart to Brockenhurst Train Station (visit http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk for more details on train times and fares). From Brockenhurst station it is a short walk to the hotel. Taxis are available at Brockenhurst Station.
  • Coach:  National Express coaches travel throughout the day to Southampton. A single ticket will cost approximately £15.00, book in advance at www.nationalexpress.com. Once you arrive at Southampton Coach Station, you can walk to the Central Train Station where you will be able to take a train directly to Brockenhurst. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes (visit http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk for more details on train times and fares). From Brockenhurst station it is a short walk to the hotel. Taxis are available at Brockenhurst Station.
  • Road:  Most major hire companies operate at Heathrow.  Join the M25 at Junction 14, and then take the M3 and M27 motorways to Southampton.  Directions from here can be found in Road travel from the M27 motorway below.  If you prefer to travel by taxi, you should expect to pay a considerable amount.

 

From London Gatwick Airport to the Wessex Institute

Gatwick is convenient for flights from across Europe and North America, including many with low-cost airlines.

  • Rail:  The airport rail station is part of the airport’s South Terminal building, and can be reached by a free transit link from North Terminal. Direct trains run hourly during the day to Southampton Central station and Brockenhurst Station. (visit http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk for more details on train times and fares). From Brockenhurst station it is a short walk to the hotel. Taxis are available at Brockenhurst Station.
  • Coach:  National Express coaches travel throughout the day to Southampton. A single ticket will cost approximately £22.00, book in advance at www.nationalexpress.com. Once you arrive at Southampton Coach Station, you can walk to the Central Train Station where you will be able to take a train directly to Brockenhurst. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes (visit http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk for more details on train times and fares). From Brockenhurst station it is a short walk to the hotel. Taxis are available at Brockenhurst Station.
  • Road:  Most major hire companies operate at Gatwick.  Join the M23 on leaving the airport, and then take the M25, M3 and M27 motorways to Southampton.  Directions can be found in Road travel from the M27 motorway below.  If you prefer to travel by taxi, you should expect to pay a considerable amount

 

Road travel from the M27 motorway

Exit the M27 motorway at Junction 1 and take the exit towards A337/Lyndhurst. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Lyndhurst Rd/A337, Continue on A337 always following the signs to Brockenhurst. After about 7 miles, you will see the hotel on your left. Turn left onto Balmer Lawn Rd/B3055. The carpark of the hotel will be visible on your left once you have entered into the Balmer Lawn Rd.
