 Local Attractions

milano1Construction of Milano’s gothic cathedral began in 1386, and to this day it remains the world’s fourth largest cathedral. Inside, there is a wealth of impressive architecture and collection of over one hundred marble statues. Visits to the roof of the cathedral offer spectacular panoramic views of the city. Central Milano is home to an abundance of museums, including the Museo del Duomo which gives an account of the building of the cathedral, and the renaissance Castello Sforzesco now contains several museums. Milanese galleries and museums boast impressive collections of renaissance artwork; however the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, close to the Sempione park, contains the cities most famous – Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’.

 Shopping

milano2World-renown for Italian haute-couture fashion, Milano has many streets dedicated to fashion retailers. The main shopping area is concentrated between the Piazza Duom, Piazza Cavour and Piazza San Bibila, and is home to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the nineteenth century shopping arcades believed to be the oldest in existence and famed for their extravagant architecture. Flagship stores of fashion houses including Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, and Armani can be found on the Via della Spiga and Quadrillatero d’Oro, and the nearby Corso Buenos Aires is reputed to be the longest shopping street in Europe, with a wide range of both Italian and global stores.

 Beyond Milano

One hour by train from Milano, Lake Como can be found in the foothills of the Alps and is perennially popular with visitors due to its outstanding location and pretty towns. Lakes Maggiore and Lugano are also a short distance away. Monza, a town renown for its many interesting churches, parks and Grand Prix racetrack is only 15km northeast of Milan and easily reached by bus or train.
